Canada Council for the Arts Announces $25 Million Alberta Focus Fund

The Canada Council for the Arts has announced a major new investment in Alberta's arts sector, creating the Alberta Focus Fund with a commitment of $25 million over five years. The fund is intended to help artists and arts organizations across the province create new work, strengthen organizational capacity, and connect with audiences in communities large and small.

The announcement builds on the Council's Alberta Focus Initiative, launched in 2025 to deepen engagement with Alberta's arts community and better understand the unique opportunities and challenges facing artists and organizations in the province.

Funding will be delivered through existing grant programs and is expected to benefit artists and organizations across disciplines, with particular attention to Indigenous, Deaf and disability, and racialized artists, as well as rural, remote, and official language minority communities.

The investment comes at a time of renewed public support for the arts in Alberta. Earlier this year, the Government of Alberta announced an increase to funding for the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, providing additional support for artists and arts organizations across the province. Together, the provincial investment and the new Canada Council commitment signal growing recognition of the arts' role in building vibrant communities, supporting economic activity, and enriching quality of life.

In 2024–25, the Canada Council invested approximately $17.8 million in grants and prizes in Alberta, supporting artists and arts organizations in communities across the province. The new Alberta Focus Fund represents one of the largest targeted federal investments in Alberta's arts ecosystem in recent years and further strengthens a positive momentum for the sector as both provincial and federal governments deepen their commitment to arts and culture.

As municipal budget discussions approach this fall, these provincial and federal commitments highlight the opportunity for all orders of government to work together to ensure Alberta's arts and culture sector can continue to grow and serve communities across the province. Special thanks to Canada Council for their work in making this fund a reality.
