INTERSECTIONS

An Opportunity to Learn Together

The Rozsa Foundation has partnered with the University of Calgary's Haskayne School of Business Executive & Professional Development in providing this professional development program for arts managers & leaders to help ensure Alberta’s vibrant arts and culture sector continues to enrich us all.

Intersections sessions are sessions within Foundations of Arts Leadership that are also open to our other training cohort along with arts professionals in the community. Intersections are four-hour training opportunities that offer a chance for arts leaders at varying stages of their career from across the sector to learn together. By opening Intersections to both our training participants and the greater arts leadership community, our hope is to foster collaborative learning, problem solving, and knowledge exchange.

During this session, we will explore some of the essential elements of financial reporting, cash flow, forecasting, and budgeting that often challenge not-for-profit organizations. We will spend time navigating and analyzing financial statements to gain a further appreciation for how the priorities and characteristics of organizations, along with decisions, can impact these statements and financial forecasting. We will investigate the similarities of financial forecasting in the budgeting and grant application processes.

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Identify essential elements of financial reporting, cash flow, forecasting and budgeting

  • Calculate and interpret a few financial ratios that can be used to provide insights into areas which need further analysis

  • Perform a basic break-even analysis to support a strategic decision

Intersections 2: Revenue Strategies

Facilitators: Col Cseke and Guests

At a time when arts organizations struggle with precarity and funders consistently seem to have less to offer, how can leaders adapt? What are ways organizations can look to diversify, strategize, and work for a more abundant revenue generation plan? This session will feature a panel discussion and a deep dive into Inside Out Theatre's work in this area with Artistic Director Col Cseke.

By the end of this session participants will be able to:

  • Articulate the various revenue streams available to arts organizations

  • Identify untapped revenue generators within their organization

  • Create a "mini-plan", a simple actionable roadmap toward implementing one revenue tactic

Intersections 3: Boards & Governance

Instructor: Alexandra Hatcher, Founding Partner, Hatlie Group

This session will look at the systems and structures of governing a non-profit arts organization and what tools are needed to support good governance practices. The session will provide participants with the opportunity to explore their own organization and the role of strategy, policies, managing a board, and the art of a good board meeting agenda.

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

We will examine advocacy approaches and levers that can be utilized to advance the arts as well as map out policies and decision structures within the Government of Alberta and the City of Calgary.
